about MD
Welcome
to the Multihull Development web-site. Like most innovative,
technology based companies, Multihull Development started from the
belief that there was a better way to do something, and it would
be lucrative to be the company who figured it out.
I
learned about boats at my family's yard, Dick's Marine Brokerage,
situated at the northern most point of Buzzards Bay. I can't
tell you how many boat bottoms I've scraped and painted, how much
teak scrubbed, and top-sides buffed. I did not know it at
the time, but this was the perfect education for an aspiring boat
builder. I was able to study (for many hours...) bottom design,
deck configuration, storage organization, maintenance access, system
design, and how it all came together (or fell apart) on the delivery
to our customers on the often treachorous waters of Buzzards Bay.
Feeling
the unquenchable thirst for messing about in boats, I set out to
develop a product that had a real reason to exist. After earning
a degree in marine engineering, as well as my USCG ticket, I jumped
on a ship, working as an operating / repair engineer for about three
years. Shipping affored the time and money necessary to build
a working proto-type to prove the merit of the ideas we would be
trying.
Enter
Chris White, Multihull Development's designer of choice. A
very accomplished multihull designer, sailor, and world cruiser,
Chris White impressed me with his overiding concern for offshore
sea-keeping ability, performance, and cruising practicality.
With Chris' experience, we were able to pragmatically move ahead,
without straying too far from a working body of knowlege.
The
resulting Buzzards Bay 33 has proven our ideas and convictions that
there existed a better boating reality. We've removed the
negatives. No longer does the weather have to cooperate for
you to have a nice day. No longer are exorbitant fuel bills
a necessary evil.
It
may sound strange coming from a boat builder, but I still think
that boating is not so much about the boat. It's leading an
active and healthy life immeresed in as much beauty as possible.
I try to build boats that support this mission, without getting
in your way in the process.
